iPhone 17 lineup breakdown – Design, display, and performance

With multiple options now in the lineup, choosing a new iPhone is no longer as straightforward as it once was – and the same holds true for the latest iPhone 17 series. The lineup includes 4 distinct models, each thoughtfully designed to cater to different user preferences and usage patterns. By carefully comparing iPhone 17 models based on performance, visual appeal, and features, users can select the right option that best fits their daily needs.

Design

Among all the features of the iPhone 17 lineup models, the one that clearly sets all of them apart is their design. The standard iPhone 17 retains a familiar look similar to previous iPhone models. It has a clean back with a compact dual-camera layout that sits within an oval island. The iPhone 17 Air, on the other hand, takes a bolder route. This model features a wide horizontal camera strip running across the back, which Apple fondly labelled as ‘plateau’. This plateau only has a single camera on its left side.

The Pro and Pro Max models are the most distinguishable in this line, thanks to their larger plateaus on the back that house three cameras. Not only that, but they also have a glass inset below the plateau.

The material choice also varies across the lineup. The iPhone 17, Pro, and Pro Max use anodized aluminum frames, while the Air stands out with a polished titanium finish that adds to its premium feel.

Dimensions

While all four models sit in the same general size category, the differences become clear when held side by side. The iPhone 17 and 17 Pro are nearly identical in height, with the former measuring 5.89 inches and the latter, 5.91 inches. They differ quite a bit in weight: the iPhone 17 weighs just over 6 ounces, while the iPhone Pro weighs well over 7 ounces.

At 6.15 inches, the iPhone Air stands taller than both of those, yet it remains surprisingly light at  5.82 ounces. So, it lives up to its name, with a slim, sleek feel despite its size. The Pro Max is the largest and bulkiest in the lineup, measuring 6.43 inches height-wise and weighing more than 8 ounces.

Display

The iPhone 17 line has earned high praise from technology enthusiasts for its upgraded, vibrant display across all models. Apple has kept display quality consistent across the lineup. All four phones support the same high pixel density (460 pixels per inch). Plus, each of them also features smooth adaptive refresh rates from 1Hz to 120Hz, always-on display functionality, and anti-reflective coating. When it comes to display quality, no model in the iPhone 17 lineup feels like a compromise.

The only difference one would notice in the display is the phones’ screen sizes, which is obvious given their different heights. The iPhone 17 and Pro feature a more compact 6.3-inch screen, while the Air features a 6.5-inch screen. The Pro Max, of course, takes the lead, with a 6.9-inch screen.

Performance

The iPhone 17 lineup delivers high performance across all 4 models. The standard iPhone 17 runs on the A19 chip, while the Air, Pro, and Pro Max models use different versions of the more powerful A19 Pro. Even with the basic A19 chip, the iPhone 17 delivers a better performance and speed than its predecessors.

The Pro and Pro Max also benefit from advanced cooling systems that include vapor chambers and new cooling technology. This allows them to work even faster and for longer periods.
